The format mostly remains the same as last years event, with a couple of changes. It is still a race to 7, alternating break, rack your own, true double elimination. However, unlike last year, neither the 9 ball nor the 10 ball will count on the break, no matter what pocket it drops into. Also, there is a separate division for the ladies this year. In the 9-ball division, which begins today at 1 p.m., there are 24 women, and in the 8-ball event, 36 women signed up. There is no separate division for the ladies in the 10-ball event. Defending 10-ball champion Darren Appleton delivered a donut to Melissa Little in the first round and won 7-2 over Linn Petty in the second, but he was stopped in the third round by Manny Chau in a hill-hill affair. From there Appleton ousted Vince Tedesco 7-2 and Tommy Tokoph 7-6 but was on the wrong end of another hill-hill match, this time against Bernardo King Kong Chavez. Earl Strickland made his first appearance at the event and did quite well. He lost his second-round match to Kings Santy 7-4 and fought his way back through the one-loss side. His meeting with Steve Moore in the eighth round was the match of the event. Moore jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but slowly and surely Strickland chipped away at Moores lead. Strickland managed to tie the score at double-hill and then prevail for the win. He was eliminated in the next round by Sal Butera 7-5, ending up in ninth place. Shane Van Boening World Cup of Pool Philippines

September 10th, 2009 admin No comments

Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morris had a narrow escape and just managed to get into into the last 16 of this year’s competition.

The American pairing of Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morris, who just over a year ago held the trophy in Rotterdam, Holland, managed to make their way into the last 16 with an exciting 8-7 victory over Malta.

This was the match of day one at the SM Mall North Annex in Manila, Philippines, where a large crowd watched six first round matches.

Local fans ended the day happy as Filipino legend Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante cruised past an out-classed Qatar 8-1.

There were also wins for France, China, Spain and Australia with a further six matches to be played today.

The PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool features 32 two-player teams from 31 different nations, each vying to win one of the most prestigious pool events of the year.

All the action was broadcast live in the Philippines on Solar Sports and the Malta v USA match entertained the crowd in the arena and the viewers at home.

These two nations met at the 2007 World Cup and just like then, the Americans squeezed through by a single rack as the Maltese pairing of Tony Drago and Alex Borg fought every step of the way and even found themselves breaking for the match.

However, it was Rodney Morris and Shane Van Boening who clinched victory as Borg’s dry break allowed them to run out for the win.

There was nothing to separate them at 4-4 as experienced pool player Drago coached his less seasoned team-mate through some trickier moments.

A break and run in the next followed by a fluked carom on the 9 saw the USA move into a 6-4 lead and when a missed bank shot in the next by Drago left the table on for the Americans, they moved comfortably to the hill.

Some sloppy play from USA gave chances to Malta and they steamed through the next two to go 6-7 and when they took the next there was excitement in the arena as a massive upset looked on the cards.

It was not to be though as a dry break sealed Maltese fate in a thrilling encounter. America now face Indonesia in the last 16.

“We’re just pleased to have won,” said Morris. “I was in the team two years ago so I know what Tony and Alex can do. Hopefully things can get easier for us.”

Shane wins big at Diamond

August 21st, 2009 admin No comments

Shane Van Boening former World Ten Ball Champion once again shows his total dominance over his peers. Amongst world champions in multiple disciplines, the so called “ South Dakota Kid” once again shows that his skill  ultimate in  ten ball. The crowd never ceased to be amazed at the tremendous power from his break. Combine that with an incredibly  stroke, and you could well argue that this tournament was his to throw away.

Undefeated in the preliminarys, Shane beat Louie Smith 7-2, James Roberts 7-1, Neil Fujiwara 8-2, Larry Nevel 8-2 and Mika Immonen 8-5. Giving himself a shot at his first Seminole Pro Tour championship, Van Boening would await the victor of a  powerful loser’s side division.

On the Loser’s side Larry Nevel was clearing a path straight for the title. He eliminated Johnny Archer 8-3, and Stevie Moore 8-2. Unfortunately Nevel would fall one game short of a shot at the title, as he would succumb to “The Iceman” in an epic hill-hill battle.

The finals were set, pitting the same finalists from last weeks Mezz classic Shane Van Boening and Mika Immonen. The two exchanged heavy body blows early on. But it would be Shane who started pulling away. Leading 6-4 and looking like he was going to cruise to victory, Shane missed a very makeable 6 ball. This would allow Mika to close the gap to 6-5. This would prove to be a very key game indeed.

In the twelfth game, both players hacked back and forth for control. With a difficult rack the two players exchanged safeties. It looked like Shane would be the one to blink first after he attempted a kick safety. However the four ball that hung in the jaws of the hungry pocket was unkind to “The Iceman”. After pocketing the long-distance four, Mika would scratch in the opposite corner pocket.

Leading 7-5, it would seem that frustration would begin to take its icy grip over Immonen. An errant push at the conception of the 13th game would leave him in a deep disadvantage. After contemplating for several minutes, Mika failed at an off angle two-rail kick to make contact on the one ball. Visibly shaken at the direction the match was taking, Mika was forced to sit and watch as Shane would take control of this game as well as the match. Exercising his precision cue ball control and beautiful shot making, Shane would run out the rack and lay claim to the hill at 8 games to 5.

However Immonen championship skill would not allow him to go down easily. Mika would make a great run-out in the next rack after a botched safety by Van Boening. Immediately after that, Mika came with a crusher of a break. He was unable to come up with a clean shot on the one and was forced to play safe. Both former US Open champions would engage in a safety battle. Van Boening would secure the first opportunity acquiring ball in hand after a missed kick on the 1 ball by Immonen. Unfortunately for Shane however it would not be the last opportunity in the rack. Tricky position below the 8 ball forced a miss from the young champion.

Immonen had his work cut out for him what looked like an easy draw as it started out with a bye would turn into quite a challenge. Immonen would defeat Mark Ritter in his first match 8-3, Dan Dennis 8-3 before he would face off against heavy hitter Shawn Putnam. Immonen made quick work of Putnam defeating him 8-4. His roll would continue as he would send Hohmann to the one loss side 8-4 as well.

In the match for the hot seat, Mikkia Immonen had his work cut out for him as he went to the hill against Shane Van Boening. Immonen managed to pull it off sending Shane Van Boening to the one loss side. Once on the one loss side Van Boening would lose to Rodney Morris 8-2 sending Morris back across the chart to face Immonen.

Mika Immonen who had made his ways to the finals undefeated was determined to take home first as he and Morris would battle it out in a long hard fight to determine who would take home the first place title. Van Boening dominates Frost in Action Challenge Match

August 4th, 2009 admin No comments

shane-08texasopen

After taking a 50-29 lead over Scott Frost after one day of play, Shane Van Boening extended that lead to 100-63 after two days of play and finished the Barbox 9-Ball Action Challenge Match with a final score of 150-104.

Van Boening had the advantage on the break as Frost seemed to struggle with his break for most of the three days of play. Add to that a handful of bad rolls going against Frost and Van Boening’s usual flawless play, and it was a decisive win for Van Boening.

Both players put up $5,000 with the winner taking the entire $10,000.

The match was streaming online by The Action Report and sponsored by OB Cues, CSI (Cuesports International), Fisher Custom Cues, and AZ Billiards.
